about

My Sister's Keeper was originally written in 2017 and recorded in 2018. The song is about my position as a sibling of a substance abuse sufferer and what that is like from the perspective of a family member. Because the song created a bit of controversy, I never released it. Recently my sister Delilha asked me to send her the song again because she was on her own creative journey and wanted to write music as well. Already a strong and talented poet, I thought this would be the beginning of our powerhouse duo in music. Sadly my sister's life was taken by drugs on July 13, 2021. I am releasing the song and video as part of an addiction awareness campaign to honor my sister's memory and to not let her death be in vain. The single can be purchased here on Bandcamp with all proceeds of this song going to the Kansas Family Advisory Network (KFAN) in Wichita, KS where my sister lived. This song is dedicated to my sister Delilha and all who have lost a loved one to this terrible condition. I would also like to send love to the people still going through the trenches of what she referred to as the Subculture on Broadway in Wichita, Kansas. I see you, I hear you, I believe in your healing.

This current version of My Sister's Keeper was recorded/engineered by Reto Peter at Teahouse Studio in Oakland, CA. The video was filmed and edited by the ever talented Versoul for Avdio 1015 on location in East Oakland, CA.

I would like to also extend a heartfelt thank you to Nina Shaw-Woody at KFAN for your endless love, kindness and support.

lyrics

Chorus:
Hey there Delilha what's it like inside the trap house
Hey there Delilha when will you be coming back out
Hey there Delilha I know I'm so far away but
I wish that I could show you there's a better way

Verse 1
I am my sister's keeper, I pray the Lord will keep her
I light up every candle, but she follow the reaper
She call at 2am, I know that she ain't well
She on that sh*t again, she put us all through hell
I feel like I'm the oldest, never got to be the youngest
And I know that I'm the coldest, when it comes to being honest
I try to be there for you, teach you knowledge of self
But this is more than just advice man it's your mental health
I don't know what it's like for an addict, but I know that's more than a habit
One day you're doing fine, next day you right back at it
We've had our sleepless nights, from the times you've disappeared
And I feel so helpless Momma's crying want you near
I know some people hurt you, one day I'll hurt them back
My list of names is long and I might do time for that
I know you're going through it, I'm going through it too
You don't know the love it takes, just to be there for you
And it's hard to keep the faith, when all you do is pray
I had a few tricks up my sleeve to make sure you were safe
And I kept all of your letters from when you did your bid
You was always Grandpa's favorite, since back when we was kids

Chorus

Verse 2
We both miss New York City, one day we'll both go home
Maybe things will be different, you won't feel so alone
And I know I can't do much, from a thousand miles away
But I try to check in by phone to see how you did today
You had your beef with momma, you never knew your daddy
You left home way too early, raised by myself with Granny
Maybe it woulda been nice to have my older sister
But I got acclimated without you in the picture
Remember the time, remember the time when life was simpler
But now it's a grind and you know the streets is cold like winter
I wish that I could save you but I swear I don't know how
I hope you don't stop writing, coulda had your book by now

Chorus

Bridge
With a radio, with a radio, outside your window with my radio
They gon play our favorite song on the radio
We gon work it out screaming how we made it tho
With a radio, with a radio, outside your window with my radio
They gon play our favorite song on the radio
We gon work it out screaming how we made it tho

Chorus x2
